Happy hump day book loving friends,
We are still reeling from our adrenaline filled weekend, what with YALC, a trip to London and a Harry Potter book release we have only just managed to calm down and catch our breath. Thank you to all of you who came up and introduced yourselves to us as we manned the YALC freebie table on Sunday and to everyone who lingered to chat about books and share recommendations. It was so fantastic to meet some of the people who we have spoken to online and to place some faces behind the bookstagram/twitter feeds, as well as making lots of new friends too!
We headed over to YALC on Sunday helpfully guided by a large group of people on their way to the London Film and Comic con. Thank you to Stormtrooper, Spiderman-being-eaten-by-a-shark and their family for the calm directions! When we finally made it to the gigantic, jam-packed venue (and had another coffee!) we stationed ourselves on the freebie table to dish out copious sweets and Book Box Club bookmarks. I’d had too much caffeine and way too many toffees by this point, so if I was over forceful with my free sweet bowl, I am sorry. I distinctly remember us shouting “free sweets” in very high pitched voices! There was such an amazing vibe in the room as everyone discussed the authors that they were about to see, the books they had bought and whether or not they had already finished reading The Cursed Child.
We saw some amazing Harry Potter cosplays too; Gilderoy Lockhart, wizard with spooky contact lenses and Snape; shout out to you guys, what a great effort! We soaked up the Hogwarts atmosphere from our stand as people walked past with wizard mocktails made of dragon’s blood, or searching for golden snitches. A mini potions lesson took place right next to us. Thank you to our buddy Mariyam for making us a little blue Book Box Club potion when we couldn’t join in! So cute!
We then had a mooch around all the lovely publisher stalls and were very excited to win an ARC of Saint Death the new Marcus Sedgwick book from the friendly folk over at Hachette Children’s. We picked up lots of awesome bookish swag, bumped into Alwyn Hamilton, chatted to publishers about what exciting things they have coming up and bought books we’ve been eagerly awaiting (anyone read And I Darken yet?). Seeing the trailer of our September theme reveal showing on the main screen was the icing on the cake. What a perfect end to such a brilliant day! We left London tired and weighed down with lots of books and free stuff, but very happy and proud that we had welcomed into the wonderful UK YA community by so many friendly and positive people. Thank you so much to the YALC super team for organising such a fabulous event. We can’t wait to see you all next year.
Does anyone out there have any great YALC stories or have you posted a YALC wrap up blog? If so we’d love to hear from you, please share your links/tales in the comments below, so we can follow your blog/share in your adventures!
Have a lovely bookish day!
